What Is Remedial Massage – And How Is It Different From Relaxation Massage?
If you’ve never booked a remedial massage before, you might be wondering what actually makes it different from a standard relaxation treatment. It’s a fair question – and the answer matters if you’re dealing with pain, tightness, or a specific injury.
Here’s a straightforward breakdown.
Relaxation massage is exactly what it sounds like
A relaxation massage – sometimes called a Swedish massage – is designed to reduce stress and help you unwind. The pressure is generally light to medium, the techniques are flowing and rhythmic, and the goal is to leave you feeling calm and comfortable.
There’s nothing wrong with that. But if you have a specific problem – a sore lower back, a tight hip flexor, a shoulder that’s been giving you grief for months – relaxation massage isn’t going to fix it. It might feel good for a day or two, but it’s not addressing the underlying cause.
Remedial massage is clinical and outcome-focused
Remedial massage is a targeted treatment aimed at identifying and addressing the actual source of pain or dysfunction. It’s used to treat musculoskeletal issues, chronic tightness, injury recovery, postural problems, and movement restrictions.
The pressure is typically firmer, and the techniques are more specific. A qualified remedial massage therapist will assess how you’re moving, identify what’s contributing to the problem, and work on the structures that need it – not just the area that hurts.
At S&T STEPS, Stacey uses a full range of remedial techniques including deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, dry needling, cupping, and sports therapy principles. Sessions are structured around what’s actually going on, not a generic routine.
What does a remedial massage session involve?
Your first session will start with a brief assessment – where the problem is, how long it’s been there, what makes it better or worse, and whether there’s any relevant training or injury history.
From there Stacey works through the areas that need attention, adjusting pressure and technique based on what she finds. You won’t just be asked to lie there while someone works through a standard sequence. The treatment changes based on what your body is actually doing.
Sessions are available in 30, 45, and 60 minute formats depending on what you need. Private health fund rebates are available for eligible sessions.
Who is remedial massage for?
Remedial massage is useful for a wide range of people – not just athletes or people with serious injuries. It’s worth considering if you:
- Have chronic pain or tightness that won’t resolve on its own
- Are recovering from an injury or surgery
- Train regularly and carry ongoing muscle soreness or restrictions
- Sit at a desk all day and deal with neck, shoulder, or lower back issues
- Have been told to “just stretch more” but it hasn’t helped
You don’t need a referral and you don’t need to be in serious pain to book. A lot of people come in with something that’s been quietly bothering them for months and leave wondering why they waited so long.
