A lot of people book “a massage” without really knowing what they need. Fair enough, most of us aren’t sure what the difference actually is until someone explains it.
There’s a real difference between something that helps you relax and something that treats the reason you’re sore in the first place. Both have their place. But if you keep booking the wrong one, you’ll keep getting short-term relief instead of an actual fix.
So here’s a rundown on remedial vs relaxation massage!
Relaxation is exactly what it sounds like
General relaxation massage is about easing stress and calming the body down. It feels good, it helps you switch off, and for a lot of people that’s genuinely all they’re after. Nothing wrong with that.
What it’s not built for is fixing an underlying issue. If the same tightness or pain comes back a few days later, that’s a sign the massage helped you feel better temporarily without addressing what’s actually causing it.
Treatment goes after the cause
Remedial massage and sports therapy work differently. Instead of easing tension generally, the treatment is targeted at whatever’s actually going on, whether that’s an old injury, a movement pattern that’s overloading one area, or muscles that are compensating for something else.
This is what Stacey does at S&T STEPS. She’s worked at AFL and VFL level with Melbourne Football Club and Casey Demons, so she’s spent a lot of time treating athletes who need to get back to full function, not just feel looser for a day or two.
How to make a choice in remedial vs relaxation massage
A few signs it’s worth booking treatment rather than relaxation:
- The pain or tightness keeps coming back in the same spot
- You’ve got an old injury that flares up under load or after activity
- One side of your body feels noticeably tighter or weaker than the other
- Your movement’s restricted, not just uncomfortable
- You’ve tried a few massages already and nothing’s actually changed
If none of that sounds familiar and you just want to unwind, that’s a completely valid reason to book too. The point isn’t that one is better than the other. It’s booking the right one for what’s actually going on with you.
Not sure which one you need?
That’s fine, most people aren’t, it’s completely understandable if you’re unsure if you when remedial vs relaxation massage. Send us a message and tell us what’s going on and we’ll point you in the right direction before you book anything.
