LGBTQIAPN+ Inclusive Spaces

Tim Moss

This Week's blog is written by an amazing organisation at Euphoria Social! We wanted to amplify voices of the community on this topic, so please read this really important piece they've written for us!

In rural communities, LGBTQIAPN+ individuals can sometimes feel isolated or unseen, making inclusive spaces like S&T Steps Gym vital for social connection, well-being, and mental health.

LGBTQIAPN+ individuals can face significant mental health challenges.

Key statistics:

* Nearly three in five (58.7%) LGB+ individuals have experienced a mental disorder, compared to 19.9% of heterosexual individuals (ABS).

* LGBTIQA+ youth in rural areas report higher experiences of discrimination (44%) compared to their urban counterparts (VicHealth).

How you can help:

* Avoid making assumptions about someone’s gender or identity based on appearance.

* Use inclusive language and respect identities. Introduce yourself with pronouns and encourage others to do the same.

* Listen and learn. Everyone walks a different path. If you don’t understand something, take the time to listen and educate yourself. LGBTQIAPN+ people are just like you—there is nothing to fear. We simply want equality and the freedom to live authentically.

Businesses & Community Groups:

* Show that you’re a safe and welcoming space by displaying LGBTQIAPN+ inclusion signs or symbols, like a rainbow sticker.

* Where possible, provide gender-neutral facilities (such as changerooms or bathrooms).

* Call out discrimination. If you witness harmful comments or behaviour, address it—silence allows harm to continue.

* Stay informed on LGBTQIAPN+ issues, especially within rural communities.

* Offer diversity training for staff and encourage open conversations about inclusion.

* Support LGBTQIAPN+ organisations through sponsorship or collaboration to show ongoing commitment to inclusion.

For many in rural areas, finding an inclusive and accepting community can be life-changing. An inclusive space like S&T Steps Gym is more than just a place to train—it’s a lifeline. Here, people find connection, support, and the confidence to be themselves.

By taking small, intentional steps, we can ensure everyone feels safe and empowered to show up as their authentic selves.
